I almost choked on my coffee when I opened this up! Beautiful. The colors are so vibrant yet soothing. It looks 3 - D almost... is that a jet going across the sky on right side?

Thanks, Eia! Yes, that's a jet. You have a good eye. I had to look at it full-size to be sure. For a minute there I though it might be a meteor, but no such luck.
Thanks, Natalie!! It's a sunrise though, not a sunset. Sunrises are a lot harder because you have to get up before dark when it's still cold out.
Cheers,

Considering it's in the title of the thread I feel dumb lol. They are definitely a lot harder! I'm usually driving to work during sunrise so I never get to take pictures of it, ocassionally on trips out to the trails on the weekends I catch one. Kudos to you for getting up early enough to capture that one
Is this an HDR? I ask not because I see signs of it, but because I know it's a technique you like to use and I'm trying to figure it out myself. If this one is, I have a long way to go in figuring it out!

Ha, thanks Natalie. Not much difference in a sunrise or sunset anyway. Most of the time it's impossible to tell unless you know which way you're looking.

Hey thanks, Chris! Nope, not an HDR. I did some foreground/sky light balancing in ACR, then selective curves in PS to give the foreground some pop. Appreciate you checking in.

Ahh... thanks for sharing! I mean, I still have a lot to learn about making a natural looking HDR, but at least now I know I'm not lightyears behind!

My pleasure, Chris. I'll be honest and say that I've been becoming increasingly less satisfied with Photomatix, and it's not for lack of trying. But my HDRs lately have been coming out like crap, ever since I went to V4. I still do post an occasional HDR, but more and more I'm pushing single RAW images and doing manually blends to get the results that I'm after.

Interesting comment. I don't have nearly the practice you do, but the results do seem hit or miss beyond tone mapping or fusion, even after tweaking in LR. I haven't posted them yet, but some I have from Dante's View seemed overly 'cartoony' , mainly as I bring up the shadows on the ones where the setting sun sky truly is colorful and saturated. Local adjustments on the best shot almost seem easier. Are you doing your manual blends entirely in PS?

Yup. Sometimes I'll even blend an original with an HDR to get the best parts of both types of processing in various parts of the image. Most of the "big boys" do that, according to most HDR books that I've read. I need to get better an manual blending though. Old eagle-eye ISO spotted some bad masking in that shot above.
