SMUG meeting restrictions?

My local SMUG is restricting the meeting to those who have RSVPd thru the meetup page. This hasn't happened before at any of the other SMUGs I've attended. Is this a common practice?

    I'm not sure if the practice is common but there's probably good reason, such as respect for the venue host, to have an accurate head count in advance.

    If the venue chosen has only a certain number of seats available, that is when a SMUG Leader may ask for RSVPs. What SMUG are you a member of?
