Hello,

Need advice on vari-ND filter.

I am looking at buying Singh Ray variable ND filter (77mm thin mount)
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/609253-REG/Singh_Ray_RT_86_77mm_Vari_ND_Variable_Neutral.html

Has anyone used this before ? Would you recommend it ?

I have a B+W Kaeseman 77mm circular polarizer. Will I able to attach the polarizer to this filter ?

Depends on how wide the lens is as to if you'll get vignetting with both filter stacked. So, what lens?

    I have Canon 17-55 f/3.5 and Canon 70-200 f/2.8. Both have 77mm diameter.

Have you used this particular filter along with a polarizer ?.

No, I use a Cokin system. But I can say that the only place I can see you having a problem is ~17-20mm on the WA lens. Stacking the filters on the other lens should not be a problem.

I expect others with these lenses should chime in and give some other feedback.

    Thanks for the feedback.

My main question still is if I can attach the polarizer on the thin mount filter. Hoping someone who has used this particular filter can help.

Does your polarizer have front threads? (just asking because I don't know the filter) What about mounting the ND on the CPL?

If you look at the "specs" tab of the B&H page, it says "Front Filter Thread Size Not Applicable" sorta tells me that there are no threads on the front of the ND filter...

Yes, my CPL has front threads. Looks like I will have to mount the ND filter on the CPL. Other way around will not work if the ND filter does not have front threads.

My standard ( not thin rim version ) Vari- ND definitely will vignette with wide angle lenses - it will also get very very dark, until I cannot see through it. I rarely use it, as I prefer to use a screw in fixed ND.

It is ok, but not nearly as handy as I had envisioned. For long lenses it is more useful.
