catch the rays of light

Is it advisable to use smoke when photographing rays or light beams? I've been eyeing the Tronix Vulcan for quite a while. Or should I just make one for me (DIY), though not sure if its safe to use.
I need a reliable smoke or fog machine as I will be using it more often.

Any advice would help :)

I did some research on fog machines and I went for on that was about $100 but I think i could have done just fine with a smaller one.

Really? Is the quality ok for cheaper smoke machines? I want something that will last. Who knows, I might need it in the future :)

Hello Honeycomb. One of the best features of the Vulcan is that it comes with a battery, unlike those small ones you might have seen Steven. =) It is perfect for those on-location shoots where there are no AC outlets. With regards to light beams, smoke really does accentuate light. =) here is an example: http://www.flickr.com/photos/innovatronix/4803463297/
