When I navigate to http://hypo.smugmug.com/homepage/stats/ instead of the familiar stats graph, I get an empty panel containing the text

Warning: Cannot establish communication between YUI Charts and JavaScript. YUI Charts must be served from HTTP and cannot be viewed locally with file:/// protocol unless location is trusted by Flash Player.

I'm running

Firefox 3 aka Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.0.19) Gecko/2010120923 Iceweasel/3.0.6 (Debian-3.0.6-3)

Flash 10.1 r102

NoScript 2.0.9.3

Follow up

After some experimenting, I've concluded that this problem is caused by a specific version of the NoScript add-on (2.0.9.x), and that it is specific to Firefox 3.0.x
  • the error goes away if I revert to NoScript version 2.0.8.1
  • the error is not present with Firefox 3.6.13/NoScript 2.0.9.8/MS Windows 7

I've posted a report on the NoScript forums but had no response: http://forums.informaction.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=5878

Hi, I am sorry that you are having trouble. Have you tried a different browser? NoScript may also need to be set to trust the SmugMug site as we have seen it cause problems before.

    Sorry, to clarify
    • I have used this browser and set of add-ons to access all features of SmugMug without a problem until a week or so ago.
    • NoScript is configured to allow scripts from smugmug.com
At the suggestion of something possibly relevant in the NoScript FAQ, I upgraded it to the "latest development build" (version 2.0.9.7rc6), but it did not fix the problem.

Sorry for not being a bit more specific. To help me determine if this is just something in your browser, or something larger. Can you try another browser? That will help me narrow down the possible causes. I have no trouble accessing the stats on multiple accounts using multiple browsers. Thank you for trying other things with NoScript and verifying that SmugMug is allowed.

It is very possible that this is a Linux issue. We do not officially support Linux but the site should work for most things.

Hi, I'll try a different browser when I get a chance (probably about 10 days time), but to reiterate:

Stats were working with this browser, on this system (i.e. Linux), with the same set of add-ons (NoScript etc), until quite recently.

So it's got to be either a recent SmugMug change or a recent update to NoScript (probably) or Firefox (less likely) that's at fault.

    Thanks for your help.

    Cheers,

    Malcolm

Happy to say that this seems to have fixed itself overnight. Mysterious -- perhaps a YUI update?

Alas -- I was too hasty in concluding all was well!

Since my post, the problem has returned. Very peculiar that it worked again momentarily; perhaps due to an old version of code lingering somewhere in the caching hierarchy/CDN?

By the way, I have updated my Flash plugin to 10.2 and NoScript to 2.0.9.9rc2 in the meantime, to no obvious effect.

As for trying a different browser, I also tried to load the page in Konqueror, but it crashed :-(

I have posted this question in the NoScript forums. If I have no joy there, I guess my next port of call is YUI and/or Flash support...
