Sub-Categories in Events?

So I know if I just went with the 3-tier model (cat, sub-cat, gallery) I'd be ok. But... i need my customer's to be able to save favorites, etc so I need to use an event. But an event appears as if it can only hold galleries... Any way around this?
Scenario:
We just photographed a cheer competition. We have 220 or so teams in like 6 different classes. Each team will be in their own gallery. But instead of showing 220 galleries on one page. I'd like to show the different classes (the sub-category) and then have the galleries in there.
Any ideas?
