When Katrina was coming, I couldn't believe that people wouldn't leave (if they could). I know I would.

Now comes Rita heading for Texas, and I was dumbfounded last night that my brother didn't want to leave his home in the burb's on the north edge of Houston. The I-45 was almost a standstill, as people from the south poured northward. Many of the exits were blocked, gas stations closed, etc. It took him 4.5 hours to drive from work instead of the usual 25-40 minutes.

They have been offered a place to stay by a distant relative in Dallas. Just go! Get the heck out of Dodge! But they thought they would stay ... My brother is a very smart, well educated guy, and for some reason, his/their "logic" seemed to believe that hunkering down was the best option. I do agree with him that they don't have the same issues of flooding as N.O., and I agree that a direct hit of the hurricane to his house is statistically low, but some people do indeed win the lottery! And dead is dead ... :cry

Numerous calls from family here in Edmonton must have worn them down. At 5:15 am our time we received a call that they were on the road heading north to Dallas.

To all others in Rita's path, please get to safety. I/we will all help after to rebuild, but we need you to make it through the storm ...

Now this is in two threads, it is important!!!
Well, that is a nightmare, the road (s) is/are clogged and the airport is backed up. That is my worst nightmare here in Charleston.

We sat in a "parking lot" situation in the late 90s w hurricane Floyd, which ended up not being a problem.

We voted that governor out in mass, we did. Remembered the situation collectively when he came up for re election.

I have said repeatedly since then that this place cannot be evacuated. I don't think I would have tried, ever, except that Katrina has scared the hell out of everyone.

I am sitting here now, wondering why that storm is not in the Atlantic, given the time of year, watching the traffic and it is not pretty, IMO!

ginger (another lesson to be studied.............and I hope they do, as it is a problem on the coast, only one way to go, usually, and few roads to do it in with a population explosion since any storm hit anywhere.)

If people see what is going on on the TV, it is terrible, I can see why people don't want to evacuate. It is 4 hrs to my daughter's house, ordinarily, when we evacuated because of Floyd, it took us over 24 hrs, one car broke down almost there, and my car broke down on the way back.

As I said, the governor lost his job! For sick people it would really be a nightmare. We had animals, but we also had a/c in our cars and water, we don't have the a/c now. They should be reversing that lane, but it would still be a nightmare!!!!!

Yes, I would still leave now.....................

    Earlier than later.

ginger (and that does not apply to people trying to decide now. I will say in the Charleston situation the people who left a tad later than we did, during Floyd had a faster ride as they did reverse the lanes finally.

    So go..................)
