picture titles - used where, if at all?

I entered titles for all my pictures in Lightroom but they don't seem to be putting in an appearance on the site. Do you guys just read the caption field instead? I would have thought any title present might have been prepended to the caption or at least appear on the page somewhere?

Or I have I understood what the IPTC "title" field is for???

yes, you have to fill in the caption fields in order for them to show up on the site. Please have a look at the instructions here:
