My daughter had her 2nd local tournament this past Sunday - happy to report that they took 1st in their division.

This was held at the Colorado School of Mines and the court was located in the Student Rec Center. Above the court was a jogging track where the spectators watched from. This gave me a new angle to shoot from and it was fun to experiment with the different vantage point.

Lighting was actually pretty good. It was all in-direct lighting - bounced from the fixtures to the ceiling. I couldn't see the bulbs, but there appeared to be at least two different kinds and I did get some color cycling. There were also opaque windows that let in natural light, but it was snowy and overcast the entire day.

The D300 I bought off eBay never arrived (that's another story), so these are again shot with my Olympus E30. No fancy rented lens this time, just with a 50-200mm lens (Mk1).

Shot in full manual, 1600 ISO, 1/400 or 1/500 shutter speed. White balance was also manual, using a cheap expodisk. In post, I did minor color correction on some, cropping and filtered through noise ninja.

I really tried working on getting faces in the shots this time. Timing is still something to work on - too many shot with no ball in the frame. Autofocus performance of the Olympus is still lacking, which is why I want to try out the Nikon.

Anyway, enough BS. A few selected shots from the day. C&C always welcome.

Those are terrific. I always struggle to get faces in volleyball photos and it seems like when I do get a face, it's not a pretty one. I would love to get above the court. Great job on #6-perfect timing.

Are you in the bleachers? Your vantage point is interesting. You have a nice shooting angle on these shots.

This gym was at the Colorado School of Mines and it had a running track around the parameter on the 2nd level.

It was nice having an elevated position above the court on three sides - I could always move to the opposite side of the court no matter which side they played on. The only problem was getting position among the rest of the parents.

I love it when we are in a gym with a running track or elevated place to shoot from. Volleyball is so hard to shoot either through the net from the end of the court or behind the up-ref or down-ref next to the net. Any suggestions or tips on shooting vball that I should take advantage of? Trying to learn all I can here. Nice work these are beautiful.

I'm still learning to shoot the action as well, so I don't have a lot of advice to give at the moment. Johng's feedback in my other vball post was very helpful.

Also, I found this link back in the fall when I was shooting my daughters HS games. This guy has a nice page about shooting volleyball and has some good advice: http://www.biggirlinthemiddle.com/Shootvb.htm
