I have a Nikon D90 and I really want to try my hand at HDR photography. Is there anyone that would be kind enough to walk me through how to do this with the D90 setup?

Use the bracketing option-on the left side under the flash button. press it and use the rear thumb wheel to set options(how many shots/ev). You will need a program like Photoshop or photomatrix to merge the seperate(bracketed) shots. I hope this helps

This is not unique to the Nikon D90 so I moved this request to the Technique forum where you'll find more discussion on HDR methods too. thumb.gif

I don't want to be in a discussion about HDR at this time, I need to know how to set up the Nikon D90 for it.

I did this and I am only getting 2 shots and the continuous shooting isn't working.

while pressing BKT button , adjust both dialers , and look at top display
on the left you see number of frames , on the right EV

you must set to 3F [ rear dialer ]

I think it is working now
I didn't realize that you had to take 3 pics, I thought you only needed to take one and 3 would come out.
Like the setting raw and jpeg, you take 1 pic and get 3 exposures.

you have it set on ? [ top menu , with the camera-icon ] multiple exposure > ]

    also
next to display are 3 buttons
use the middle one with the dialer
in the display you must see the same icon [ a stack of 3 squares ]

Ok, I spoke with Nikon and it is now working. If anyone else has a D90 and needs help to set it up for HDR, let me know. I will be happy to give you a walk through

These are the steps to set up your Nikon D90 (per Nikon) for HDR photography. This procedure, if set up correctly will allow you to take a photo (only 1 click on the shutter release) and receive 3 images on your memory card...

    1. select Menu
    2. select the pencil
    3. select bracketing/flash
    4. select auto bracketing set
    5. select WB bracketing
When finished, hold bracket button down (left side of camera) and use both command dials to select 3F and how much + and - you desire.

If you can not see bracketing setting with the button held down while in WB bracketing (this happened to me)
then push the +/- and the AF button down at the same time for 3 seconds (these buttons are located at the top of your camera) After that you should be able to see it.

Oh and while in WB bracketing, continuous mode does not work. However, you only have to click once and you get your 3 exposures.

    Hope this helps.

sorry , but i think my method is better
WB bracketing cannot be used with RAW , witch is preferred for HDR
    use AE and continuous works

by the way, the continuous is working now, I took it outside and all is fine. It was having problems focusing inside and it didn't work then.

one thing that Nikon said though is the continuous doesn't doesn't necessarily get you the best quality where as the WB bracketing gets you the one shot, best quality, 3 exposures.
    Worth considering maybe?

yes , true , since it has no chance for moving objects and foliage
but , RAW has all the dynamic range you are after , JPG lacks that
