Will this flash fry my camera?

A friend gave me an old Sunpak 433 D flash that he had used with his Nikon Film camera and has analog controls on the back of it. It says exclusively for Nikon cameras on the back of it but I have heard that these can be used on other cameras as long as the voltage output can be handled by your camera. I fired the flash 3 times on my camera and it was super powerful and looked great so I don't know if I should keep it on the camera, or get a ttl cord and fire it that way.

The Sunpak 433D was apparently produced over time and with different trigger voltages reported. While none of the reported voltages are extreme, over time it could damage your camera if directly connected. I do recommend using either a Wein Safe Sync or use the 433D flash via a remote slave of some sort.

The Wein SafeSync is a little pricey and does not support any TTL signals, but it safely conveys the primary trigger pulse to fire the flash.

That's just an off camera cable.. You'll still fry it if the voltage is high enough.

Awesome, thanks everybody...any recs on cheap triggers? or is there a thread for that? im new with this type of stuff, I usually try to avoid using a flash at all cost haha

I use a lot of old flash guns, mainly from charity shops. I check this website...

...but mostly use them off-camera with wireless and light triggers. Nothing expensive.

Your flash is listed as "Your Call"...so some report it as safe, others not...it looks borderline safe, to me.

Cactus V5's are $60/pair. They are transceivers so you can do a little more with them. I just ordered 3 sets... Since my Youngnou never came in after 9 weeks of waiting for them. Their YN-602 are cheaper, you can get a transmitter/4 receivers for about $90 on ebay from their store, but risk not getting it.. Someone said the CHinese Post is to blame, they sent a lot of mail in December "slow boat" vs "air mail" and it took longer, but people have since gotten their orders. Except for me. Ugh. So time for a refund

So...funny story...I was testing out the flash again on an old camera and it sparked and started smoking...needless to say, I am not the proud new owner of a Sigma 530 Super Flash

Congratulations on the new flash.

I have 2 of those flashes and I'm very pleased with their performance and value.

So far I really like the signs. Really powerful. Quick recycle time. I might pick up a few more and ditch my studio flashes that I don't have a battery for haha
