Tripod or Ballhead Upgrade Worth It? (055XPROB / 488RC2)

I've been using a Manfrotto 055XPROB Aluminum tripod and 488RC2 ballhead for a little over a year now.
It works fine, but I've noticed that when I have my Canon 100-400 mounted on my gripped 7D, I get some camera shake/vibration that seems to take a few seconds to dampen out. Add a little wind, and it never dampens. I have a theory that much of the shake is caused by the mass of the camera/grip/lens onto a ballhead that has a relatively long post compared to other ballheads, but that's just a guess on my part and since I've never used any other tripod or ballhead I have no basis for a comparison.
Have any of you that have perhaps used the tripod and/or ballhead I mention and upgraded to a higher-end tripod or ballhead, seen an improvement in vibration dampening?
I realize that there will always be some vibration/shake in this configuration, I just don't know how much to expect or what if any improvements an upgrade to either the tripod or ballhead will deliver.
Thanks.
