Which wide angle lens?

I currently shoot with a Canon 40D. I am looking to upgrade to the Canon 5D Markll. Thoughts on a Canon wide angle versus a Tamron wide angle? I need it to be fast f2.8 or faster as I shoot a lot of bands. Seeing as the Tamrons are much cheaper then the Canons I am wondering if you really lose quality between the two brands. Thoughts?

Thanks!

The Tamron 28-75mm, f2.8 SP XR ZL Di LD Aspherical (IF), if that is what you're referring to, works pretty well on crop cameras but I don't recommend it for FF use. The edges and corners are pretty soft on a FF camera body.

The Canon EF 24-70mm, f2.8L USM is considerably better and even the older (used) Canon EF 28-70mm f/2.8L USM would be preferable.

The Canon EF 35mm, f1.4L USM and Canon EF 24mm, f1.4 L USM II work very nicely on the 5D MKII but they are pricey (and worth it IMO). You might look at a Canon EF 50mm, f1.4 USM. While it's not very wide it is a normal AOV for FF cameras and a very good value. I use mine at F1.4 but it does have some halation until around f1.8-f2.2 or so. By f2.8 it looks very nice and sharp. The USM is a Micro-Motor USM but should be fine for your purposes.

Another vote for the Tokina lenses. I initially had a 12-24 f4 which was great but wanted something faster. Now I have my 11-16mm 2.8 and I LOVVVVVE it. iloveyou.gif

I love my Sigma 10-20 HSM EX. It is a fantastic lens. They now have a 3.5 constant aperture version thats a touch pricier. I have never had significant issues to warrant a trade-up, and frequently shoot with tripod or in plenty of light.

Lots of images in this gallery

I think the original poster is looking for a wide-angle full-frame lens recommendation for the Canon 5D MKII. I hope I am correct in how I read her question.

I use my Tokina 11-16 on my D700 FF with great success. Although, it becomes a prime at 16mm due to it being a crop body lens.

Yes I need something that will work with my current 40D, but then be a perfect fit for the Mark ll. Looking for wide angle zooms.
