ND Filter Question

I know someone that has a few Cokin ND filters but they are not graduated. My question is, can I use these like a graduated filter by inserting them have way down the holder, so the top half of the lens is covered by the filter and the bottom is not?

Am I just better off getting graduated filter or will this work well enough?

Go Graduated. It looks really funky, at least when I've tried to do that...

Would probably work for flat horizons like the ocean, if the are flat on the bottom.
I have never tried the holder thing. I just hold the filter in front of the lens.
If you are getting into landscapes you are going to want graduated eventually, even if the other does work.

You've answered my next question and that is, I can I simply hand-hold the filter rather than with the holder. I can't seem to find the Cokin P-series hold in stock anywhere.

Right, but even with HDR, you don't get the same effects as with ND filters. For instance, stacking ND filters to get slow shutter for milky water in daytime. Can't do that with stacked exposures.

Yes, you can hold them in front of the lens! Done it many times when I just needed one or two Shots and then moved on!

2filter.com looks to have the P holder in stock.... They seem to be the place that always has something even when others are out of stock (The Z Pro CircPolarizer was unavailable from B&H for months it seemed but 2filter had it and nobody else did..)

FYI, if you are looking to buy and don't have a ton of P size already, you can get a ZPro + 3 ND filters 2, 4, 8 from B&H, 2filter.com, Adorama for around $180. Even comes with a little case for it all.

Shutterbug cameras in Santa Rosa has a pretty good selection of Cokin Filters. I have bought mine there. I have use the edge of the ND filter on a horizon I have used in conjunction with grad filters. Fun to play with.

They also great for shooting wide open when it's bright out or when you're using powerful flash and wanting to kill the sun.
