These are between 90% and 100% crops using the Canon nFD 300mm F4.0L on the Panasonic GH1 (so, all manual focusing without IS):

    Thanks!

Yeah, he's about the size of a typical sparrow but with a longer beak.

Actually I should have said she... this is a female Kingfisher. :)

The kingfishers in Japan are much more colorful than our local kingfishers.

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

Sorry I missed your comment Harry. I just saw it now while cleaning up my subscriptions.

    Thanks for the comment!

Yeah, there's several different kinds of fishers. I dunno all the types but so far I've seen this type (obviously), a White & Black one with some red markings, and one that's grey and white but with a yellow head. The "Common Kingfisher" (Alcedo atthis) in my photos are in other parts of the world I think but I dunno where. One of those bird pages would show it I guess.

This page has a nice birdly description http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/fe20080123at.html :)

Numbers 4 and 5 show incredible timing! I like the last one where he is perched stretching his wing. Nice sequences of a handsome kingfisher! thumb.gif

Good series! What zoom were you at? In some of the shots I can see shutter of 1/1250 but it didn't quiet freeze the action for some reason. Cheers!
