Can anyone help the new kid on the block? :)

Hey all! This is my first post but I've been reading all of your comments for a while and they are so useful. Thanks!!

I signed up with smugmug about 2 months ago and have found it to be perfect for sharing my amateur pics with family and friends. Enough people started asking me to shoot events for profit, however, that I am on the verge of upgrading to a pro account so that I can actually make some money. :) Fun! I have a few questions, and maybe someone out there can help me out...

1) Does anyone know of a photographer in the Bay area that would be willing to let me shadow them as a second photographer, free of charge? I want to get a feel for wedding/portrait photography and don't know of any other way to go about it. Hmmm.

2) I am SO new at this and don't even really know the basics: When I upgrade and customize my pro-account with Smugmug I want to use my own URL address (which I realize I need to buy)... I've been looking on Network Solutions. Is that the best way to go?

Any Smugmug start-up advice would be much appreciated! Thanks!!

don't throw your lense money away. Go with godaddy.com. 10 bucks vs 20-30 bucks. It's your money though so if you wanna throw it away.....

Not even 10 bucks... I second the godaddy.com recommendation.

$9.20 US will get you through GoDaddy, as it will with many other "discount" registrars. Now, if you go with G.D., and you're going through the many pages of registration, just don't check the radio button that says something like "show me all the other special offers" (or something like that). Do check the button that says "I've done this before; express checkout please" (again, something like that). The difference is that you'll save about a half hour sifting through another 7 or more pages of "offers" and checking the "no thanks" button a thousand times; all having little or nothing to do with registering your D.N.

There are some downsides with registering with any discount registrar. That is, that they'll sell your name and address information to heaven knows how many entities. I can tell you for certain that you will receive a Visa or Mastercard offer in the mail every other day. For one of my clients, a dry cleaners, I registered in their business name and my home address. I've always been tempted to fill out one of those card apps, receive the card, and then go pay for my dry cleaning with a credit card in their business name.

YES! Half of my domains are registered with them, and I'm just lazy to transfer the rest to them, too..

I'm not sure that GoDaddy has to sell the info for other people to get it and start sending you offers. It's public info after all, and marketers can get it no matter what registrar you use. That's not to say that GoDaddy doesn't sell it, I don't know for sure.

Absolutely sure nod.gif GoDaddy sells the info. Only GoDaddy had the name of the biz I registered the domain name for, the host did not. Tons of mail come to me with the name of that business plus my name on line two.

Next time anyone registers with them, try placing a pseudo business name in there, and then see what the mailman drops off to your house.
