How and where are you trying to rename the photos?
I use a tool called ReNamer, available for free at http://www.den4b.com/?x=products&product=renamer. The web site does not list Windows 7 as an operating system, but I running it on Windows 7 without a problem. I copy the files from the camera media onto my computer, rename the files, then do any processing against the renamed files.
