Its party time

Hi,
i am going to be photographing a 40th party soon

please can you give me some tips on what to look for and what makes for good shots for a party as i haven't done any before.

    More seriously I think the bigger issue is where and what type of party this is: home, bar, intimate gathering, big group. I would ask the celebrant what they want but I'm guessing lots of candids, with posed shots of groups of people interacting, plus the celebrant interacting/posing with guests. You also have to decide if you are going to use off camera flash, or just a fast low light lens.

    I have a cannon 550D and i have cannon 75-300mm, cannon 18-55mm, cannon 50mm' cannon 35-105mm and a sigma 18-250mm lenses. I also have 50AF -1 metz flash gun.

    what should i use that would give me the best opportunities to get the best shots ??
