All shot with Canon 5DMk2 and Sigma 105mm macro. Studio lights and black perspex sheet for reflections. All processed using Silver Efex Pro in CS5.

I know what you mean. I think it's just the reflection from the back-lit diffuser box onto the black perspex. It reflects off-white, instead of black. It gives the shots a graphical look. It also helps having a very simple subject with clean lines and little detail.

It's actually very easy to do, once you get the light/camera positions sorted.
