What would you do?

I am currently shooting with a Tammy 28-75. I love it, but I just bought a 7d and it's time to upgrade my glass.

So here's my options:

Canon 70-200 f4L along with a 50mm 1.4

Or

Canon 70-200 2.8L all by its lonesome

What would you do?

Previously, you mentioned that you would be using the long lens mostly outdoors. If that's still true then the 70-200mm, f4L USM is very nice and the 50mm, f1.4 USM would be a bonus. clap.gif

That is true Ziggy. The only indoor shooting I do is with strobes in my studio, so I'm usually no lower than 8 or so.

Do you think the IQ on the f4 in outdoor portrait situations is just as good as the 2.8? I have heard arguements both ways.

Definitely the 2 lens package. I use the exact same lenses myself. They're bread and butter lenses for the Mark II and are /drool, especially the 70-200! Just get ready for a little panorama stitching if the 80mm equivalent is a little too much for you. I find 50mm to be a sweetspot and I still do quite a few 2x image stitches for landscapes and etc. At portrait distances the image is highly compressed no matter what, and my opinion is that for all the extra $ it's not worth it unless you have low light limitations. If you want I can post samples with it since I've had the lens for 2 years

At f4 both 70-200mm lenses will be very similar in IQ. The f2.8 does allow better bokeh when you don't have as much distance to background.

Ultimately the f2.8 is a little more versatile by itself, but the f4 version allows you to get the 50mm, f1.4 now. The 2 new lenses will give you more system versatility (along with the 28-75mm that you already have) and I think that's where I recommend you head at this point.

Figured it'd be easier (and less forum spam) to make a gallery.

Wow! Great images. I ordered the 70-200 f4L last night on your and Ziggy's recommendations. It will be in Wednesday. I will be ordering the 50mm 1.4 on Friday. I have 3 shoots this weekend, so I will post pics.

THANK YOU both so much! I really appreciate your feedback!

Now that I look more closely, I think 1 and 3 are the soft ones (that's what I think I meant) and 2 and 4 look pretty sharp. Actually 2 looks the sharpest to me. Could you post 'em bigger?

That 28-75 is a very sharp lens. If you are shooting at F4 and above the 50 isn't going to look any better.
For your needs the f4 70-200 should be just the ticket as you are already finding, yeah the 2.8 would be better for what you are doing with it, you would never notice the difference.
