I've been a bit intimidated about posting shots around here; I'm trying to get over that, so...

I tried to catch the sunset last night...and basically missed it. But as a consolation I set myself up across the river Charles and stayed out longer than I had planned.

Enjoy.

Hey ZZ.........welcome....nice pics. Afew suggestions some of which may not be relevant, since sometimes you can't always change your position ect to get a diff. shot. I like the 1st pic..and feel with a little post work such as selectively sharpening the sky line but not the sky or water and a little curves work you will be able to get the city to float on the horizon(its almost there now) and clone out the bottom L corner. The second shot might be improved by shooting at a slightly diff angle to bring the bridge into a more diagonal line and maybe go a little wider -again may not be poss. from where you were at. The 3rd pic I like but don't feel the bridge adds anything here but just pulls the eye from the city scape(jmo). The 4th seems to need some post work-I womder about the white balance it seems to have a 'tungsteny' look to it-I don't know if this is how it looked to you or not on site. This subject has lots of possibilities. Can you get to higher ground so your looking down on the bridge a bit as it leads into the city. Looks like a fun place to shoot and I look foreward to you posting future versions of these........................Mereimage

Thanks for the replies. I've actually been around a bit, lurking mostly and posting very little. I figure I've learned an incredible amount here just by looking at what everyone else is doing. But recently I decided I should post too to get the most out of it.

Which brings me to the suggestions: thanks for them. My PS skills allow only the most simple of changes yet, so I might not be able to do things like selectively sharpen. But it gives me a goal to shoot for. As for the WB, I shot all these on "shade," and didn't change things post. I always shoot raw so I can go back and fix what I mess up. But it's been a lingering question for me: what white balance do you use when there is no sun?

Well I am shooting with 20d and I shoot in raw most of the time
So I worry about wb later but I can usually can find some wb setting that looks good to me

Three of them benefited from changes in the white balance. They look much more like what I saw. It's funny (or is it sad?) that I didn't realize anything was wrong before.

    Hi ZZ,
Cool shots. Here's a pic from Boston that you can't get anymore.
    37266791-L.jpg

It's been replaced with the Bigdig. Unfortunately, the smugmug compression does not do this picture justice. Blown up large, and in print, it stands out.

    Wonderful set of shots!!
    Zigzag,

Great set of shots!! I'd have to say #4 is my favorite with #3 a close 2nd. I like the difference in daylight (or lack of) and the difference in reflection level.

I like your second series after rebalancing the color much better.

In RAW, you can use the eyedropper to click on a mid-tone grey and it will balance the color for you, or you can look at the color temp as shot or done with the eye dropper and find a value somewhere in between some times.
