This is great, facebook is now displaying a thumbnail photo when you click the "Like" button under a photo on Smugmug. At least it's doing it for me this morning, hope it lasts!!! Great way to promote your site!!! :clap:clap:clap

Facebook Like button under the photo? How do you turn it on? Is there one also for twitter?

I believe there's an option under gallery settings if I'm not mistaken.

Facebook changes to Like and Share buttons - How will it affect SmugMug ?
Here's some news about Facebook's "Like" and "Share" buttons I just read on CNN.com : http://www.cnn.com/2011/TECH/social.media/02/28/facebook.like.button/index.html?eref=mrss_igoogle_cnn I haven't worked out how this may affect us, especially given the new changes to our sharing capabilities, & I've gotta run off here, so I'll let the rest of you hash that out! It seems it's already been a bit of a gradual process, so it's possible none of us can know how it's all gonna shake-down. I know one thing... FB is prone to frequent changes, many of which seem to get most of their users upset & feeling they have no way to respond (except w/ more FB posts!) but I've wondered in the past if they should simply integrate these buttons & merge the results. Lots of people are clearly still confused about the differences between them anyway, and we've sure seen those questions & conversations here on DGrin. Ok, have at it: what will change with our Smug + FB integration?

Anna Lisa, look in post #2 here. You can see what it looks like when you click the "Like" button now on a photo on SmugMug.

Oh. (that was said w/ a sinking feeling). Eeeuw. I mean, yeah, it's good there's now a thumbnail, but yuck at the whole long description, etc. It's basically the same problem we were having before w/ sharing Smug galleries. And it's non-editable now, right? I think I saw that somewhere...

It's completely and wholly different. You can share a gallery link by pasting into your status, and edit the whole thing to your heart's content.

Using the like button, there's no editing. Make your descriptions count!

Andy, Facebook is in the process of changing the Like button so there is editing and it becomes a real post on your wall.

That's what I posted in post #6 (It got moved to this more logical thread). The CNN (via Mashable) article isn't all that informative, but that's probably because FB isn't spilling all the beans.

Yeah, I was responding directly to Andy because he hadn't read the other posts or articles that you and others have posted about.

They already made one significant change - see post #2 here and go try and like something so you can see it for yourself.

    definitely an improvement.

however, the old problem still remains that if you "like" a photo in lightbox in a gallery that is thumbnail style, the link on facebook takes you to the gallery rather than the photo.

is this going to be corrected?

Andy, if you would like to see what I am talking about, you can go to your test FB account and look at the wall of my test FB account, Nikki Castle.

I liked a photo on my site and your site so you could see the problem.

Nicole, in order to have likes incrementally counted, they can only point to 1 URL. So if we had it going to the lightbox link, and you liked the photo, it would actually show 1 like for that link, and then if you liked it in the gallery, it would show 1 like for that photo, as opposed to showing 2 likes. It's a limitation on the like/graph API on facebook, and until they change it, we don't have the ability to pass in unique URLs based on where the photo was liked.

There is not an option to like a photo while viewing it in a thumbnail gallery. The only option is in the lightbox view, so there is only one link. No possibility of two likes in that gallery style.

Right now, if someone likes one photo in a gallery of that style, a person clicking on the facebook link will think the like was for the entire gallery.

Yes, that is true, but the URLs are permanent, so if you were to change gallery style or let your users pick the gallery style, it would report erroneous likes. I tried a bunch of hacks to make it work earlier, and I'll give it a whirl again to see if anything has changed to make it feasible....

Thank you. I appreciate you looking into it.

Wouldn't erroneous likes be preferred though? Rather than people not getting linked to the correct photo? It's not like the likes are being counted as votes towards something. I would think it is more important that people get to the item that was liked, no?
