How do you use your shoot through flash umbrella??

Mine is in the closet, I use a 36 x 48 (i think dimenstions are correct), softbox. I dont think I've ever used the umbrellas. When I read about how to use them, I said I would use it the curved backside facing them shooting down from about 3 feet above their head and 4 feet back from them (to get the bottom of the iris glow that happens.

I don't have any umbrellas, but will probably order one soon. I've been reading the Strobist blog, which uses them for many things. Check it out if you haven't.
