What exactly are transparencies and how does one shoot that, do you need a special camera or is it the development process?

Film transparencies, commonly called "slides", require both special films and special processing as well as a film camera.

Exposure latitude is much narrower in transparency materials, requiring much closer attention to correct exposure. Dynamic range is also narrower than in negative film media.

Slides are typically viewed using a slide projector and screen.
