Captured this young California Quail a couple days ago. I'm pretty happy with the capture, I hope you enjoy it too. :D

I want to make some kind of joke re California being sooooo different, but I can't think of one.

Never seen a quail, who knows, they might be different in the east, too.

That is a great capture, I would be happy with it, too. The choice of f stop was wonderful for the DOF.

    Fantastic image.

It's greatly helped by the basic LAB recipe discussed here.

I played with it, but won't post unless you want me to.

I think the pop of the picture was greatly improved.

It was a pleasure messing with such an awesome picture.

I had already done some LAB adjustments after the RAW conversion. I made a 10 point adjustment on the a and b channels and then sharpened the L channel. I thought it looked a little unreal when done any higher than 10. But if you think its better I'd like to take a look.

    Regards,

Ok, I take what I said back. :D

I went back to the image and played with the curves a little more. Added a 20 point adjustment to the a and b channel and made a slight S curve to the Lightness channel. Now what do you think?

And now with additional LAB adjustments:

Maybe even more contrast? Sometimes I have a hard time knowing when to stop.

I think I've been looking at them too long. Not even sure if I've made that much difference headscratch.gif

I think either of your re-dos are better.

Yes, it's kind of subtle, but the colors are richer.

As for the contrast, I think either is fine.

But yes, that is what I was talking about.

    Nice work!

He is a beautiful little bird and knows it - all of our local quails, the King Quail and the Stubble Quail have disappeared - wiped out by predatory domestic-gone-feral cats. Liked your magpie also, they are much more elegant than ours.

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"
