Need To Know My Options

Ok, so Ive almost got my tripod selection hammered out. I just want to know if there are any better, or closely matched setups that I should be lookin at. There are soo many options, its a bit overwhelming

First, Im set on a Pan and Tilt head. I really like them. Second, Im thinkin about 65" would be perfect. Third, in the neighborhood of $250-$300 would be nice. Thats for the whole combo.

One thing Im not sure about is compatibility with an L-Plate. I will be getting one, and it will get used often lol.

Anyways, with all that in mind. I was lookin at the Manfrotto 055XPROB with the 804 head. Has the features Im lookin for, at the price Im lookin for. It does seem a bit short tho.

Any input is appreciated.

I like anything with an Arca Swiss style mount. It is SOLID. It will make the L plate really easy to use too.

Well, don't just go off the height of the tripod... once you add the head and mount the cam, it will be another 4-6+ inches.

Ahh, I didnt think of that. Thanks for the tip.

    Arca-Swiss-Style Head
Lots (at least a few) other brands use the Arca-Swiss style and are compatible with Arca-Swiss mounting plates. Check out the compatibility before you buy.

    Ahh, I didnt realize that.

Is that why the Kirk and RRS plates work with different tripods then?

As an example of what I mean, I use an Induro tripod and Induro BHD-2 ball head which is compatible with the Kirk L-bracket on my D300 and the Kirk foot plate on my 70-200 Nikkor lens.

Arca Swiss is just a standard. So different manufactures make compatible ball heads and camera plates. I like it because it is such a rock solid mount when using a camera plate. I think that universal QR plates are some sort of mean joke. Use one and flip your ball head to portrait mode or use just the right tilt and your camera will unscrew itself from the mount. Using a camera plate eliminates this completely.

I found a Joby ball head that is Arca swiss compatible for $60. I want to get it for my big gorillapod:D It is a sweet little ball head for the money too.
