Vancouver in HDR

I recently caught the ferry over to Vancouver and spent the evening watching the North Shore Challenge, a juried photography competition hosted by the North Shore Photographic Society. After a great evening of photography I spent the rest of the night with a friend and talented photographer shooting the Vancouver skyline in HDR. Here are a few of my shots from that fun night.

*PLEASE NOTE* If you do not like HDR please note that I recently asked for a separate forum on Dgrin for HDR images and was shot down.

I really believe HDR should be shown in its own class so that photographers that do not like it do not have to have it in their regular forums. If you agree please post this in the suggestion box forum.

Great job with these Brad! Really like the 4th shot.
I'm with you on the HDR stuff. Posted a request as well and got shot down. Really doesn't always fit in Landscapes. I personally hate the name of the 'other cool stuff' forum. Just makes it sound like a dumping ground :soapbox

I think the problem that people have with HDR has more to do with images that are processed to the point of being cartoonish...rather than what you have done here which is to use HDR to bring out detail in the shadows. Your images are nicely handled and don't scream HDR.

I've been using bracketed HDR on my landscape shots lately to bring out detail and most people in the landscape forum are none the wiser.

HDR is a tool and if used sparingly is often less "synthetic" looking than some of the heavily Photoshop processed images.

Nice images btw.....I especially like the sculpture shot.

    Thanks Guys

I like the more surreal form of HDR for certain subjects, but not all. I prefer the more realistic look for nature images. My images certainly get a healthy boost in the vibrance and details.

I just get lot of feedback from photographers that just dislike HDR period and think it would be nice to have a forum for all things HDR regardless of subject.

Those are all really cool. The museum image, especially, is frightening cool and really interesting. thumb.gif
I agree that these are a good subjects for and applications of the HDR techniques.

Very beautiful shots. I am particularly taken by the naked BC Place Stadium, shorn of its top. Have never seen it like that, and you have done a great job in showcasing the elegant lines, textures, reflections, and light. Great capture! And the HDR works really well in these difficult lighting conditions.

Wonderful use of HDR. It would be shame to see these pics lumped into an "HDR" gallery along with overcooked cartoons.

Although I have never been a huge fan of HDR, I really love the application in these images. They are excellent. Where were you on the north shore to get these?

Keeping an eye on the tsunami watch for your area because my son and his family and several friends aree there too. Hope everyone will be ok.

We took some of these images from the viewpoint on Cypress Mountain, some from Lonsdale Quay in North Vancouver, some from False Creek, and some from Granville Island

Very nice shots. Personally, I never mention whether my shots are HDR or not unless somebody asks. I've had HDR haters who've like shots of mine they didn't know were HDR, and I have folks comment that my HDR treatment was overdone on shots of my that weren't HDR. Always keep 'em guessing. :giggle
