How to create a xml sitemap?

How can I create a sitemap.xml and sitemap.xml.gz for Google Webmaster Tools?

Thanks Andy, the xml sitemap works!

Do you have any idea why Google Webmaster Tools rejects Atom and RSS Available Feeds. When I call them content provided is correct, Standard Compliance Mode is OK, no CSS and JavaScript errors found. They look fine to me.

The error message are:

"URL restricted by robots.txt
We encountered an error while trying to access your Sitemap. Please ensure your Sitemap follows our guidelines and can be accessed at the location you provided and then resubmit."

and

"URL not allowed
This url is not allowed for a Sitemap at this location."

We're asking Google not to index the feeds right now. Only the stuff in the sitemaps file to maximize the benefit!
