The second shot is very good ,nice exposure I would have given it a little more room and not so tight a crop. It looks like it was really cloudy good job on exposures

Thanks Jeff, I agree# 2 is to tight. I was behind, tracking the bird, and the photo ended up with the bird too far forward in the picture. I will take it back to photoshop and and rework the comp.

Your post was a help. I was not able to follow your directions exactly , as I am still using PS7 Your example was a big help though, thanks for sharing. Here is wat I could do on my old program.
Yoyur rework of the great egret image is a definite improvement. There are a number of ways to add cnavas to a capture. A quick and dirty way with oen with a sky BG is jsut to copy the original image, paste it as a new layer onto the original, convert the new layer to a smart object, then use the move tool to add more sky to the image. You will have to clone out a slight line between the two layers.
