Shot some martial arts tonight (Krav Maga). Difficult learning experience, but I think I finally learned the camera technicals. 1/125 at f/5, using flash to freeze most action. The relatively long shutter helped with background exposure. The timing and composition to come next. Critiques welcome.

    Martial arts
    Bill,
You got the exposure nice, but like you said composition next.

I think it would be less distracting to either have the main subject + person holding the pads in frame, or just the main subject. Having an elbow or stray arm and pad sticking in frame draws away from the main.

In the first 2 shots perhaps having shot from the other side for more of a profile shot would have worked. You can also try some other angles, maybe getting lower shooting up.

Great start at an unfamiliar subject.
