I have been offered a speedlite that was used for journalistic work and wondered about 2 things. Does the bulb go after a while and will my 540ex ii work with these two flashes together?

Regards

The flashtube and the electronics of any flash has a finite lifetime. Variables such as power level, number of flash cycles, atmospheric/ambient temperature and humidity, physical trauma, etc. can all play a part in the lifetime of a flash.

The Canon 420EX is capable of being the wireless slave to a Canon:
    550EX
    580EX
    580EX II
    ST-E2

Additionally you can use a Sigma EF-530 DG Super (EO-ETTL II) flash as master to the 420EX.

I use one as my second flash, triggered by an STE2. It has NO MANUAL MODE, but as long as you're happy using ETTL it's great. Very happy with mine! FWIW, I paid $120 for my used copy ~2.5 years ago - works a treat.

Is there a serial number on this model that tells the age of it?
