noise and the fz30
Been planning to purchase the new Panasonic fz30 even at the inflated price that it will be sold for in Australia as it seemed to have the features that i had been looking for, then i read a report like this second from the top.
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/read_opinions.asp?prodkey=panasonic_dmcfz30
Of course it his opinion and who knows where he's coming from, is he being over the top with his review. Should your average point and shoot (me) happy snapper get too concerned about it.
Cheers Ed.

The whole noise issue is way overblown (IMO). I don't have an FZ, I own an Oly E-300 (great camera by the way) and there are the "pixel peepers" that complain that it is noisy (compared to Canon, Nikon blah, blah, blah...)
Anyway, when looking at the images at full size on a computer screen you will see noise, but print them out. I doubt you'll see any noise at even large print sizes.
What I would do if you are really concerned about it is download some of the full size images from dcresource, stevesdigicams and dpreview, print some out/have them printed at what sizes you think you'll be printing at and see how they come out.
I doubt you will have any problem with noise.
Good luck
Sorry to disagree but the noise issue is real. The FZ upped the pixel count and lowered the pixel size, and as a consequence the FZ30 has noisier images than its predicessor's the FZ10 and FZ20. The noise is such that at iso400 the shots are noisier than a 20D at iso3200. I have owned a FZ10 and loved it and was excited to hear the new version was coming out and am very dissapointed to see Panasonic is simply playing the MPixel game at the expense of image quality.. If you are only planning to use it out in the daylight you can get great shots but you will see noise even at iso80. In low light like indoors it will not be very usable. Panasonic had a chance to stay at around 5MP and to really improve noise - this would have made it the best mid priced digicam around- it already had IS, and a great zoom lens. For the price of the FZ30 I can get a Canon 350XT and a much more functional camera...jm2cw

I don't think you can get a new XT for the same price as an FZ30. FZ30 <$600, XT with kit lense >$800.
Also, I'm not saying the FZ30 is not noisy, but the noise issue is overblown. Looking at the image on screen at full size has little to do with what it will look like printed at even 13x19 or downsized to fit on a computer screen.
I think I did say it was a daylight camera too. Shoot at ISO 80 and 100 print 8x10s, 14x whatever you'll have no problems.
I had a Sony 828 and it was noisy at 100% even at ISO 64, but it printed great. It's a non issue for 99% of users.
But if you enjoy looking at images at full size on your computer screen and scrolling around looking for flaws, then the FZ30 is not for you.
