Not my usual thing, and I'm not even sure if this works or not, but I kept coming back to it so it's obviously "speaking" to me... even though I can't quite figure out why :scratch

C&C always welcomed.

I think the girl speaks to me more than anything else, while I like the picture, I don't think the sign being there feels like it's adding much.

maybe if you got in closer and focused on the girl dropping everything else out of the frame, although it looks like you were using a telephoto already, so I assume you are already in as much as possible.

    Nice job! Keep shooting!

Thanks! I'm still not sure what it is about it that keeps me coming back. It was shot at 70mm, so not that tele (although that was all I had with me so zooming in further wasn't an option). I could crop it down, but I kind of liked the groups of figures on the left vs the single figure on the right. It sort of goes "1, 2, many" if you include the birds rolleyes1.gif

Definitely not my usual kind of shot, but I'm having oodles of fun playing with the new lens, so when we went on a walk yesterday it was a no-brainer to take it with me and experiment thumb.gif

My guess is it speaks to you because she's yours. I think it would speak more loudly if you were much closer to her, with a wider lens, and then had her in the right foreground, and the birds, etc., in the background on the left...

    Entirely possible rolleyes1.gif

That said, what I think intrigues me about it is the people and the birds rather than The Child, I think; the different ways people (or animals) are inhabiting the bigger space. But it obviously doesn't read like that universally, so I'll clock it up to "you had to be there" and put it into my folio of shots-I-like-that-do-nothing-for-anybody-else lol3.gif

I'll tell you this, though, those were the bravest flippin' geese I've ever met in a public space - no food or enticement involved, they just marched right up to inspect without so much as a moment of hesitation! I'm amazed we didn't get honked and pecked....

This one works for me divamum. I think it's because it's so much the opposite of the type of shots you normally post of her.
She's usually looking at the camera and smiling. I like her here walking with her head down , it has a solemn vibe.
While I'd also like to see it closer and with a wide lens, this one still works for me and I love the processing.

I actually like the shot. It is very moody, a little tragic perhaps.

I like the picture. Very moody - and consistent with your daughter's age. It speaks to me at an emotional level. I would treasure it if it were a photo of my daughter (or granddaughter).

As a small nit, I find the dark portion at the top of the picture (the far shore) distracting. Of course, it probably will look great when I get back to my calibrated monitor!!

As for cropping, I started by thinking that, if it were my photo, I would crop it to bring her closer. But after playing with options, I think that there is something complete about the photograph as framed, so maybe not.

I like it because, as Virginia notes, it is a moody shot that you captured well. I would leave it as is as the girl is contrasted with the couple and birds presenting a "life goes on" sense.

I think the dark band is my processing - I got pretty contrast-heavy on this (as well as added a vignette); in the original it's got plenty of detail that I could lift out of it.

Liz and Virginia, I think you've nailed why I like it - it's not her usual "on camera" mood (and it is HARD to catch candids of her - she has "paparazzi-ambush" radar and immediately starts posing!)

Thanks for the thoughtful comments, everybody! thumb.gif

I like the composition. I also like having the sign on the left side to balance out Little Diva. The people to the left side do distract me, as does her shadow being cut off. Definitely a winner. I think a little more cropping could make it stronger.
