I actually missed a really big strike David. I just sit with 2 x 1 gig cards & the camera on self timer. As soon as i hear the shutter finish the shot i hit it again. You have to use the timer as your finger on the button will move the camera ever so slightly.
I wish the 20D had a 2 second timer as i was waiting the 10 seconds for the shutter to open when a huge flash went across the bridge.
Cant have it all.
PS...thats that crappy canon kit lens everyone loves to hate.

Thats a great shot Gus. We caught the end (or was it the beginning) down here at about 3. All 15 minutes worth of it. As uual I watched it blow away on the Storm Tracker.
Probably not much use to you I dont kniw if theres a QLD one. When I saw lightning over Brissy I knew you'd have something good to share

Tks RM...it didnt really eventuate until about 7.30pm. More predicted tonight & tomorrow but my bones are 'saying nothing' tonight. You can say that when your well on the wrong side of 40.
I use Marburg Radar & hit the loop function to measure the speed it closing & exact direction. Sometimes i also use lightning tracker but they say the info is 15 mins old & frankly i use the hair on my neck for that function.
Thanks for looking everyone...its a buzz watching it & then actually getting it.
I was told today that that was the only day this year that the bridge lights are purple (breast cancer week)...usually they are a type of sodium vapour yellow. I was lucky.
Standby cause this season im going to try for one straight from under at 10mm..hey every forum needs a memorial trophy.
very nice... you know, the last time I took a shot like this I got a bit of a lecture. glad to see you survived the storm.
peace.

Thanks johno...just saw your shot...how'd i miss that . Its got some deep colours mate, very nice.
The jurys still out with me & lightning. Its about potential between atmosphere & earth. Ive been working in electricity & a high voltage destruction lab for maybe 20 years. You have to ensure you are not the best path or near it.
I would happily stand on that bridge to shoot from it as its just a massive earth rod of which im am a part of BUT not the path to ground. Would i stand on the ground & lean on it ? ..no way.
I would'nt stand under a tree in a pink fit. You just have to make sure your not a path & with something smaller than a kazzillion ton steel bridge..thats a hard call. I recon im in more danger from a car mounting the footpath whilst im walking on my way to shoot the lightning than the actual lightning itself.

How do you time it? Just shoot and hope there's a display? Or are you really that good?
