What's preferred for a 20" beauty dish, white or silver? Doing portrait work BTW.

Thanks

My understanding is that the white walls will produce the soft light, while silver produces harsh light.

Now, that said, if I am wrong I hope i'll be corrected since I plan on building me one of each kind...:)

It's not about soft or harsh since the source of the light is the same size. The difference is in the other qualities of the light. The silver will be more efficient in light transmission but it will also be more contrasty, which could be good or bad depending on what you are looking for in the shot.

It also depends on when and where you are shooting. Shooting in a studio with other lights, usually I use a white dish. Outside (depending on the conditions) I use silver.

There are a lot of factors involved. Like any lighting accessory it depends on what, where, how, and what else is being used at the same time.
