I have just received confirmation of my order and a new Canon 350D (xt rebel) is on its way. This is the first SLR I have owned.:)
I have ordered the body only and need a good walkabout lens. After buying the 50mm f1.8 I will have approx £350 left.

The Sigma f2.8 24-70mm and the Tamron f2.8 28-75mm have been mentioned. Are there any other recommendations? Any variations on wtb?

What is your shooting style? I like wideangle shots, so a lens starting at 28 (making it a 44 in 35mm equiv) would never be good enough for me as my main walkaround lens. If you shoot wideangle, you may want to look into the 17-40L 4.0, which suits many people as a walkaround lens. You won't have that much reach, but you can always make up for that later with the 70-200L 4.0. The combo of the 17-40, 70-200 and 50 is not uncommon in here among Canon shooters, and offers a relatively budget set with great quality. It could be that the 17-40 is priced out of your reach, but I'm not aware of the local prices in Britain.

    Cheers for the reply Marlof.

I don't suppose I have a shooting style as such. I'm a complete newcomer to photography and really only know the basic of basics at present.

Considering what I think I will be mainly taking shots of are going to be landscape, cityscape, portraits. A good topic of choice would be motorsport's but I rarely get the chance to go to any, looking forward to for next year I will have the chance and probably buy the 70-200mm f4.0L or similar at christmas.
My main task is to learn. The one thing I have learnt so far is the price of glass is astronomical, the 17-40 f4.0L is £560 over here in 'rip-off" Britain.

With a cheap prime in the bag I think a good basic lens to find my feet is needed. The 17-40 is out of my reach at present.

Wow! That's expensive. It can be had for less then GBP 460 (incl. VAT) over here if you shop wisely, and I already though we were expensive... I believe several Dgrinners love their Tamron 28-70 though, and think it's optically very nice. You could always (if you learn that you'd like to go wider) later add the 17-35 that I've read good things about as well.

How about the Canon 28-135IS. It's not L quality but it's a great walk-around lens in my opinion.

Personally, I use my 50mm prime 90% of the time. If you're just learning, it's the lens that will teach you everything you need to know. Just use your feet to zoom.

Thanks for everyone's input. Currently sat here awaiting the delivery of the DSLR and have just ordered the Sigma 24-70mm EX DG Macro for £279 which is due tomorrow. Should keep me busy for a while. :D

Edit: It's arrived!! The grip is soooo small even with my tiny mitts. Now all I need is for that lens to arrive. Time to get stuck into that manual. :D

I'll have some pics up soon.

One Question regarding the new lens. When I look into the lens I can see what look like 2 very small pieces of black (plastic?) I'm 100% certain that they are internal.

Now on some test shots I did I can't see any problems, should I send the lens back? I am currently unable to print any off to see if they show. I'm not too sure on whether this will cause a problem as this is the first SLR & lens that I have owned. headscratch.gif
