Yes, I guess it IS technically hand-holdable. And I did get some keepers this way, but folks, a mono-pod is probably less expensive than a chiropractor.

What lens is that, Ric? My 500mm is too long to hold like that. The fulcrum point of my forearm is too far back and causes the lens to want to tilt down. I just hold it the regular way.

Thanks for the hint Ric, but I adapted my stance from my offhand free rifle stance, and I'm pretty steady (if not completely comfortable) with it. The weight of the lens is transferred from the tripod mount, through my forearm to my hip.

John, Joel, and Ric, I always pay attention to your observations and advice in this great forum, but I gotta tell you, no special stance or yoga posture or anything else is going to enable me to hold a lens that big--with or without the bird resting on it! Best, Pam

Okay...it looked to me like you were not so comfy in that first pick.:D

....and Joel, that's the 400 DO IS that I just sold. Now with the disaster in Japan...I don't when or if I'll ever get that new 400 f/ 2.8. :cry I'm sure that there are a ton of folks over there that wished they had my problems.

I may have to start shooting landscapes! :wownaughty.gifyikes

For a bunch of old geezers. :rutt
The other day my daughter made some crack about observing me as I "WIZEN!" I had to remind the disrespectful (mother of my grandchildren) that I was not the one going to Weight Watchers every week. What do you think . . . ? Should I have kept my mouth shut?

Sorry but handholding the big glass doesn't cut it. Pathfinder has the right idea

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

Dang. I shaved my beard off a few years ago. I had no idea it was a requirement for admittance to this club.

That's OK Pam, you don't have the facial foliage for membership anyway. You can use a tripod like Pathfinder.

You guys crack me up but on a quick trip to the Texas Coast I realized I had forgotten my Wimberley Head for my 500mm so I hand-held way too many shots, but most of them turn out okay and my Siggy 500mm does not have IS. I'm as steady as a rock, man!

Yeah, but that's just a pantywaist 7 lb lens, Sweetheart. Work out some, and come back when you're ready. Or as they say in the Sports Forum . . . Bring It.
