Advice, Ideas And Help Wanted For Grad Picture

So, my boy is graduating from High School this year and of course that means it's picture time. I haven't been at this long enough to be comfortable with doing them all myself, so I sent him to the photography studio that was recommended by his school. They did very nice portraiture, nice poses and great lighting, but it was pretty standard fare and nothing that really spoke about him and what's important in his life.

The boy is a bit of a "jock" and hockey has played an important part of his and our families life since he was four. I decided I was going to take a shot at doing a special hockey themed portrait to hang next to his league championship banner that is displayed near the bar in our rec room as well as something we could give to his coaches and close friends along with the studio portraiture.

I had 15 mins to set up and do a shoot in the locker room before we had to be out. Just brought a cheap mono light with a snoot to try and isolate him in the light as the locker room itself wasn't very photogenic. I still like the concept of this picture and the insert of him in his varsity jacket idea, but something just doesn't excite me like the vision I had in my head did. Any suggestions on changes that could be made to make it jump some more. Layout? Design? Start from scratch?

These were a couple of him that I did earlier in the year while I was trying out a new soft box I picked up at a garage sale. I was thinking maybe I could incorporate one of these shots into the locker room scene although I do like the idea of the varsity jacket in the insert.

Individually these shots are great and you did a seamless job at putting them together. What may be lacking is a variety of expression.

Laughing.gif you have a good point. Photographing one's own son does have its challenges. :D Fought me on everything but the "tough-guy" look all the way.

seconds on the stitch work. I really like 2 but I think it would have more "tough guy" impact with direct eye contact. IMO that one might also be the better one to share with coaches and friends rather than the top photo. Something about him being shirtless just doesn't work for me as a hand out type of shot. Keep that one for your home shrine.

    All nice shots. Well done!
