It was a whale of a day!

We're on family vacation on Maui, and having a really great time! We went on a snorkel tour on Saturday, and had the most amazing encounter with a pod of humpback whales. I've been whale watching here before, as well as in Acadia and Tofino, B.C., and have never had this kind of close up experience with whales. I've only processed this one shot so far. Who would ever expect to be so close that the fluke would more than fill the frame!

Ann, great photo, but where were you in relation to this whale? In the water closeby? Yikes! Best, Pam

Thanks Dave and Pam - we were safely tucked on the upper deck of a very large catamaran! Great view from there. Tonight, waiting for sunset, we had this view instead! rolleyes1.gif

    Awesome.

Fantatsic capture Ann. I got some whale captures while in Alaska and they are not easy captures.

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

Excellent. The first is just brilliant, and the fact that it more than fills the frame makes it for me...shows SIZE.

The second is good for "placing" the subject.

    Thanks for sharing. :)

Thanks everyone! It was a very special experience, and I am sure that I behaved like a little kid in a candy store!

We are now back home in snowy Edmonton, wishing we still were watching the whales. I'm hoping that there are more worthy shots now that I can look at them on the big screen.
