Nikon is moving away from the Dxx naming system for their lower range bodies (D40 and family, D90 and family) and moving to the Dxxx system (D3000, D5000, D7000). Finally Nikon's naming system is getting easier to understand Oh, and notice how the names always have an odd number (the 3, 5, 7, and D700 along with the D300 and D30) when they're in an odd-number generation (D1 and D3) and the numbers are even when the pro body is even (D2 and D4, so the D700 replacement will likely be named the D800).
yes, Nikon is confusing. then again Canon's 7D vs. 5D vs. 1D? also makes no sense :P
Otherwise, I got to say that the D5100 is one I'm seriously considering as a backup/fun/VIDEO camera with that sensor .... and price. Although? cannot justify it. But still, want
Well, with Canon, the lower the number the more expensive I guess it's that way with Nikon too, except for D300/D700. I do agree with you though, it can be confusing.
I guess this is Nikon's competitor to the T3i, with the D3100 being the T3's competitor. You're right, at least at the pro level, I think Nikon's cameras are better than Canon's right now. I can't wait to see what the D4 brings.

The 600D/T3i looks like a fine competitor: cameralabs & dpreview full review of the Canon 600D.
