Copying Photos? Where are They?

So, I'm trying to copy 10 photos to insert into a separate gallery.

When I click This Photo>Make a Copy

Where do I find the copy?

I could swear I did this once and the photos all ended up on the last page of the original gallery, making them easy to snag and send to the new gallery.

Can't find the copies.

Depends on how you have the gallery sorted, Sara.
As always, we need a link to the gallery and a link to a photo you copied.

    Here is the gallery link.

    Here is the image link.

I guess I don't understand the mechanics of "make a copy," under tools.

Maybe a better question would be - if I want to copy a few photos and put them in a separate gallery, what is the best way to do this?

I would also love to know what happens when you click "this photo">make a copy. Something happens, because the page refreshes.

Anybody know how I can copy a few photos from a gallery to insert into a new gallery?

For example, if I have one big main gallery and only want to share 5 photos, how do I copy these 5 photos without uploading them all over again.

Last week I could swear all I did was click on tools>this photo>make a copy. They all ended up on the last page of the original gallery. I then used the "move to gallery" tool.

    It was very easy.

This time, nothing seems to happen when I click "make a copy." Well, the page refreshes, that's all - the copies are nowhere to be found.

    Very puzzling, vexing and perplexing.

Thanks, Andy. The thing that's puzzling is, I just did this the other day, as described above.

    Sara,

Can you contact me on the help desk with a link to a couple of the photos in question? I just tested on a couple different galleries of mine and they are copying. I need to see if anything is set differently on yours. Also let me know what browser you are using as that may have an influence.

Okay - I think I can accomplish what I'm trying to do by clicking on "collect this photo" and sending it to the other gallery. That may be what I did the other day and mistakenly tried to do it via the "make a copy" tool.

Doc - what do you mean by "copying?" What is supposed to happen when I click "make a copy?"

I'm also looking at "collect this photo" as an option - though I swear I did it via "make a copy."

    The links are above.

    I'm using FF. Like always.

I have accomplished what I set out to do, via "collect this photo," and now the only question i'm left with is, what does the "make a copy" option do?

What is supposed to happen when you click on it?

Make a copy makes a 2nd copy of the selcted image and leaves it in the same gallery as the original was. If your gallery is sorted by filename or by date taken, the copy will be right next to the original in the gallery. If your gallery is sorted by something else, the copy make be somewhere else in your gallery. But, the answer is that it's in the same gallery. To move it to another gallery, you then go into the move photos command and select the copies and a destination gallery to move them.

It's kind of a laborious process for copying photos to new galleries and we've pointed that out for years, but it's all Smugmug chooses to offer for true copies.

John - thank you. This is exactly the process I used the other day, but today I am unable to find the copies for some reason.

As mentioned above, I ended up using the "collect this photo" tool that appears when you click on the image and it opens in a new window.

"Collect this photo" seems to allow the easy transfer of copies to another gallery. You basically click on the image you want, then click on "collect this image," above the image. For the first image, you choose the gallery you want it to copy to, with the option to not have that message appear again. So, then you simply keep clicking and copying and they all end up in the initially-chosen gallery.

I am glad to know that you process you describe actually exists - I know I did this just the other day. I love knowing I haven't actually lost my mind rolleyes1.gif Big relief!

I still can't find the images I copied, and I've looked high and low, on every page of the original gallery.

Edit - okay, so the "collect photo" method gives you a virtual copy. Not sure what the difference is between virtual copy and plain copy.

A virtual copy (same imageID, same physical copy on our systems) exists in Gallery B, the original, uploaded photo exists in Gallery A.

Collect doesn't make an actual copy. It just puts another reference to the same image in the new gallery. It has some advantages (exact same image in every way, including pricing, settings, etc...) and some disadvantages (you can't make different settings for the virtual copy). I use both depending upon what I want to accomplish.

Okay - but the "copy B" gallery seems to have its own characteristics, i.e. watermark, size.

So maybe I'm back to square 1 - where the hell are my copies???:D:D:D

The 2nd gallery has it's own watermark and size settings, but those don't apply to virtual copies only to images uploaded to that gallery. Virtual copies inherit size, watermark, prices, etc... from the original.

To try out make 2nd copy, select auto-sort by filename on a gallery. Select on particular image. Do Make 2nd copy. The 2nd copy should end up in the gallery right next to the original. You should see two copies of the same image in that gallery.

But my virtual copies in Gallery B are reflecting the new settings in that gallery (if you click on my V&B Photog blog, below, you'll see my ChappyWrap entry - these images are from Gallery B - virtual copies, with watermarks, as I set up the gallery. The original gallery has no watermark).

I will try what you suggest.

I don't see an option for "make 2nd copy," so I assume you mean, simply, make a copy.

I sorted to "file name," and made a copy - it appears nowhere in my gallery - not next to the original, not on the last page - nowhere. headscratch.gifscratchheadscratch.gif

I take that back - it is working, just not in the gallery I've been futzing with all day. It does work in another random gallery I just tested.

I sent the links to the Help Desk a couple hours ago, maybe they will have an answer at some point.

It might not work on collected photos or photos in a virtual gallery.

And this experience with copying images is why I just upload again from the original if I need a dupe in another gallery. It's not worth all the mousing around and double checking if it got there.

I've never had a problem with the features working the way they're supposed to. But the workflow is cumbersome to say the least. It just takes less time to find the original files and upload them again.

Successfully, I might add, thanks to Doc's expertise and patience.bowdown.gif

For some reason, there was a quirk in one particular gallery that would not allow me to use the copy tool. It was compounded by another issue that came up in the process where, even though I had my galleries (the original gallery plus a new, smaller gallery - these were, at one point, all linked to images in my blog) set to Original, I was locked out of the larger images.

Weird - but all is working again.

I don't mind the copy tool (when it works). My 5D files are huge and I hate uploading them; it takes too long and ties up my connection so I can't do other stuff.
