Thought this one was cool. A little like that awesome baseball shot. OK, just a wee-little.:D Best high-school lights I've ever shot under.

cool shot! Focus is spot on! I think this would be harder to plan to get than the baseball shot in that you don't always know where the lax ball is coming from/going to like you do when a pitcher is pitching a baseball.

Hey Arseny, Colleen and Randy. Nice to hear from you. You know what they say in the south, that even a blind hog finds an acorn now and then. Much as it pains me to admit it, I was trying to focus on the player, but just plain got lucky. The shot I got (just an instant before) of the player was boring. ne_nau.gif Gotta take what gifts you get. The more sports I shoot, the more I realize that. If you don't push the button, you're just a spectator and you don't stand a chance.

Awesome! She must have been pretty close to get such a shallow DOF. And to think not long ago you were cursing about having to shoot under the lights. That shot wouldn't have near the same effect if it was shot in daylight.

Yep. You're right about both! This was shot with a 300mm f/2.8 beast on the D300, so was actually at a 450mm equivalent. This school's stadium lighting was awesome. In addition to the main banks of lights on tall towers, they had a second smaller set of lamps about half way up the towers. The overall effect was brighter and softer. AND I believe they had mixed the phasing on the current, so the color temperature was nice and constant. Instead of shooting at ISO 6400, I was at 3200 (MUCH nicer on the D300) and this shot was captured at 1/1600. By this time there was no light from the sky either.

This shot was captured from behind the goal so, yes, she was pretty close.

    Awesome shot! Wow.

I'm curious if you know what company lit the stadium. My dad's company is an international lighting company (Musco Lighting), but they do many of the high school facilities throughout the country. That would be such a cool coincidence if they're the ones that had lit it.

I have no idea. It was South Lakes High School, in Reston (Fairfax County) Virginia.
