Changing URL's

Hi!

I'm a bit stuck. I want to (re)organize my album a bit.
When I'm starting with this it seems that I have to realize that all links I provided to other people, sites or links made by interested outsiders shall be lost which is very annoying. It means I have to accept that or leave the album as it is without being able to renovate a bit in order to keep al the historical grown links alive. (?)

Stupid enough I made yesterday such a step and saw that the gallery-views felt from more than 600 until almost zero, which is, for me, a big deal!

Normally it's not a big deal to set up a "Redirect(s) 301" in your '.htaccess' page and upload that file to your root directory. Not sure if Smugmug has the capability though.

Give us some examples of old URLs and new URLs after reorganizing. There are many cases on Smugmug where as long as the gallery number stays the same, the URL might keep functioning even if the category changes.

If you want unchanging links to send out, you can use vanity URLs that you control where they redirect to.

FYI, changing URLs can also mess with SEO.

Sorry to butt in, but I did reorganize some categories and the photos to come-up through the links even with the "wrong" category.

Here is an example of the result of moving a sub into a gallery.
“Jakarta 1977” (Old gallery closed, creating a new sub and moving the existing photos to the new sub)
Theold link directs me now to the page for creating a new gallery
and the link to the (old) gallery

If you just recategorized the existing gallery (you can change category and sub-category settings in gallery settings with moving images or deleting galleries) the old gallery links probably would have still worked, but you moved the image to a new gallery and deleted the old gallery - there's no way the old links will continue to work because you deleted that gallery.

I am not very experienced in Smugmug and all the possibilities around.

I'll start making a new test.
