Can someone please explain to me how people get such sharp images at f1.4. I am using a Nikon D300 and a 50mmf1.4 and when shooting at f1.4 I can't get sharp images. I see many many photogs shooting wide open with phenomenal results.

    1) get the subject farther away (increases DOF)
    2) use single point focus on the part you wish to be in focus (for example ..an eye)
    3) if the subject is a person..make sure both there eyes are in same plane and parallel to the sensor

What he said. But! If sharpness is what you're going for, maybe f/1.4 isn't where you want to be.

Calibrate your lens. According to this post over at nikon rumors.com cameras are typically set up for the f/2.8 range. Faster lenses, more often than you think, need to be adjusted.
