Got mine! I havent got much time to play with it yet, but I already love it. Ive got an event to shoot on Saturday and Sunday, if the weather permits anyways. So, Ill have more input then. Heres a quick one SOC of my pup from last nite.

I read some of the reviews that a Google search turned up, and the general tone seemed to be that it was too expensive for what it does, and that 18-55mm lens worked as well for a lot less. Well, I already notice a huge difference, especially at the long end. I wasnt scared away by the reviews because I used my 18-55 all the time, but in a lot of situations it was just too slow. All in all, I dont regret the purchase at all. :ivar

That lens is a must for serious shooting with DX. Focuses fast, sharp, crisp. It is one of my favorites on the 300s. For moto trials it is my weapon of choice. The differences are subtle but noticeable at all f stops. For me it seemed the colors were richer. Hard to put a finger on. But in general, better.

Lol, ya he was fine until I put that big ole lens in his face, then he was done with me.

Shot an event today with the new lens, it worked perfect. I got some much nicer images than I ever did with the 18-55mm. Heres one of the best.

Im still working on my tracking, but this one came out good.

the 17-55 is probably the single best lens you can have for a dx camera. Yeah the 18-55 is a decent starter lens, with GREAT optics, the variable aperture and 5.6 at the long end just dosn't cut it.

The more I use it, the more I like it. One reason Im liking it so much, is its a focal range Im used to having.

If the weather clears up for the weekend, Ill be using it for another event Saturday and Sunday. Itll get lots of use.

i had a tamron 17-50 2.8, the optics are pretty good, maybe better than the 18-55 but still not as good as the 17-55 nikon, the big difference comes in everywhere else though. It focuses sooooo much faster, its almost silent, and the instant manual over ride is also nice, and no 3rd party meets nikon's build quality on higher end lenses. I gave up the tamron after a guy i used to shoot with upgraded the nikon 17-55. he never stopped talking about how much better it was, then he let me use it! i had 2 have one after that. I ended up buying the 17-35 2.8 though so i could keep it when i got my FX camera.

Constant aperture is where its at though, its so versitile.
