Is there anything specific that needs to be done when configuring a Smugmug site to ensure Sitelinks are created and show up during a Google search?

Any tips to get some success with this would be appreciated.

My site is http://bobanderson.smugmug.com

I'm looking for information on how to ensure Sitelinks show up for my site under Google search Andy. I realize Sitemaps are auto-generated. When I search for your www.moonriverphotography.com site they show up, however Google isn't generating Sitelinks for my site.

    Hi Bob,

Sitemaps are not created by Google, but by us. Your site has one, too:
    http://bobanderson.smugmug.com/sitemap-index.xml
If you're using Google Webmasters and Google hasn't automatically added the sitemap yet, you can manually add the above link from my post.

    I hope this helps,

Read it again. He's talking about SiteLINKS, not Sitemaps. From Google...

"Sitelinks are completely automated, and we show them only if we think they'll be useful to the user. If your site's structure doesn't allow our algorithms to find good sitelinks, or we don't think that the sitelinks are relevant to the user's query, we won't show them. However, we are always working to improve how we find and display sitelinks."

I'm kind of curious too. Why Andy's site has sitelinks and most Smugmug sites don't. eek7.gif I'm going to guess it's because he has more traffic because of Smugmug than most of us combined...Laughing.gif! rolleyes1.gif

Thanks Mike! It will be good to know if sitelinks aren't being generated because of the structure of Smugmug sites (and if Andy has done something "special") or if it's just to do with traffic. Google seems to indicate that it only has to do with the structure of the site and if the links will help the visitor.

Yeah, we don't control sitelinks - Google has some sort of magic foo that they use, to determine when they show 'em.

It would just be great if on of the SEO gurus on the forum could share what magic beans need to go into the mix to make the sitelinks magic happen (eventually) :D

I realize this is a very old thread but I'm hoping someone knowledgeable can show me what I'm doing wrong. I've started an SEO course and one of the assignments is to submit a sitemap in Google search console. Using Andy's guide, I was able to get the link but when I submit it and test it I get this: General HTTP error: 404 not found
Anyone know what I've done wrong? This is the link I tried: http://www.chrismccooey.photography/sitemap-index.xml

When I click the sitemap URL that you provided this is what I see:

How are you submitting the sitemap index to Google? When I look at mine in Google webmaster tools, the sitemap is shown as /sitemap-index.xml without the leading piece of the URL.

No idea. I'm in way over my head and don't understand any of this stuff. Muddling my way through. Today's new problem is about page speed being slow with a suggestion to 'defer parsing of JavaScript'. Again, not a clue how to do that or even if it can be done on a Smugmug site. Any expert advice is greatly appreciated!

You can't do anything about that.
