Hi everyone
I have a Nikon D300s with a lens 18-200 VR II

I would like to change my lens to 24-70 f2.8
but I am hesitate about this situation
does the lens 24-70 have greater sharpness?
well, is there any relationship between lenses and colors?

well, is there any relationship between lenses and colors?

There are lots of differences between those 2 lenses. The Nikkor AF-S 18-200mm, f3.5-5.6G IF-ED DX VR II has a much greater range but a much smaller effective aperture at the long end of the range. The Nikkor AF-S 24-70mm, f2.8G ED has a much shorter range but it can maintain the f2.8 aperture through the range.

The 18-200mm has more distortion, especially at the wide end of the range, and it is not designed for use on full-frame/FX bodies. The 18-200mm is a very convenient zoom for travel and walk-about use while the 24-70mm is heavier and more useful for indoor and standard zoom applications.

The 24-70mm, f2.8 should focus more quickly and more accurately, especially in low-light situations. Edge sharpness should be better than with the 18-200mm on a crop/DX camera because the 24-70mm is designed to cover a larger imager.

the 24-70 will be sharper, faster focus, better in low light, and will have better contrast, color rendition, less distortion, less CA, better build quality and in all imaginable ways a better lens except for the amount of zoom then the 18-200mm.

Have you looked into third party lenses. There are some very nice lenses in the 24-70 range which would probably fit your needs for a fraction of the cost of the Nikon.
Look at the Tamron 28-75....if you don't need tack sharp at 2.8...you will love the Tamron, plus it has Macro ability which comes in handy sometimes.

    great compression
the most thing I am looking for is sharpenss and aperture
because I was considering about 70-200 VR II
then I have a friend said 24-70 is greater
so if I got this lens I should get 70-200 VR II for zoom

The 70-200 is considered by many to be one of the best lenses ever made by Nikon. It's easily mine and many other's favorite lens. It's much more popular than the 24-70 but it just depends what focal length you need. You'll get "better" images with the 70-200 due to compression and the ability to blur the background.

You will never, ever, in your lifetime, regret the Nikkor 24-70 or the 70-200 f/2.8 lenses. They are as close to perfect as it gets. Of course they should be, considering the tarrif :D.

I have both of the lenses mentioned. The 70-200 VR ll is much larger and heavier than the 24-70. It would depend on what you are planning on using the lens for. They both are sharp and hold the 2.8 aperture throughout the zoom range. The 24-70 is a great all around lens but for shooting something that requires a longer zoom lens nothing can beat the 70-200 VR ll.

Yes, there are other brand lenses other than Nikon that are good but you stated you were looking for sharpness and again, the off brands can't compare to Nikon.

The above comments are just my opinion. I have no stats to back them up other than I have used both Sigma and Nikon lenses. I find that Nikon is a better lens all the way around from sharpness down to the "feel" of the zoom ring.

On a weird sidenote, the only lenses I've found third party that even compare to the tanks that nikon puts out are Tokina. I've had their 50-135, 12-24, and still own their 11-16. I LOVE tokina lenses. They're sharp, built like tanks, and work very well.

Killer Lens. I love it on both my 300s and D3s. But I would not sell your 18-200 to get one. Both serve a purpose. I regret selling my 18-105. There are many times I wish I had that range in that small package.

The Nikon 24-70 is wicked sharp, fast focus, and really big and heavy. You could always use it as a club if you had to defend yourself too.

There is a huge light leak called the front element...j/k.
I've never heard anything about a light leak from ANY lens.

??????? Light leak on one of Nikons best ever lenses? For as much as it cost I hope not.

No no problems with it in any way. I just wish it was not a pumper lens and was 100% internal zoom and focus. Like the 70-200 or 80-200AFS. Or even the older 28-70. It seems to make sense to keep the crap out in really nasty environments. Or maybe I am wrong?

I suspect that you may mean "lens flare". If so the Nikkor AF-S 24-70mm, f2.8G ED is fairly resistant to lens flare. No light leaks in any modern Nikon lens that I'm aware of.

Did you read the comments? One of the best comments was, ...

"i tried to shoot from a D3 body, noise reduction all turned off. 30 sec, 4000 ISO and 5.6. The LCD shows some patches, not as bright as yours, on the 24-70 lens. Then I replace the lens with AFS 50 f1.4 - same!; Manual focus 50 f1.2, same!; ... then i remove all lens, only cover the body with body cab, same!!!!
I don't think is lens problem. Either is natural noise or ...
I have one thought, maybe light comes from the view finder, will shut the view finder and try again tomorrow
    ."

    (The boldface is mine.)

This seems to be a body issue as well.

I'm sure that under some circumstances of "testing" you can create some light leaking from both camera and lens. I am not convinced that this is a serious enough problem to be a negative point to affect purchase. If you have to put a piece of tape over a lens button or cover the viewfinder during extreme lighting situations that seems a simple enough thing to do, assuming that you detect a problem in the first place.

I've only had the lens since august when I bought it new from adorama.

The biggest flaw is has (as I think I've said before) is it's ridiculous sharpness.

One problem with a lens like this one is that you now have one less excuse for a bad image:D

The 24-70 is about as heavy as I am willing to go, personally. I don't do the whole 70-200 thing, not until Nikon makes an f/4 VR version that is as sharp as Canon's.

Personally, for anyone planning on sticking with crop sensors for at least a year or two, I'd get maybe the 24-70, then the Sigma 50-150 2.8, and the TOkina 11-16 2.8. The Tokina 11-16 is the ONLY f/2.8 ultra-wide available for crop sensors, and it actually works great on full-frame at 16mm too, so if you have the 24-70 helping to cover the wide end, you might be able to spare yourself a 16-35 or 17-35 or 14-24 etc. purchase later on down the road, if ultra-wide isn't something you always shoot. Then on the telephoto end, the Sigma 50-150 is a very hot lens and would hold it's resale value quite well, if you eventually decided to upgrade to full-frame. Although personally I shoot with my Sigma 50-150 2.8 on full-frame all the time for theater jobs, even without DX crop mode enabled, because the vignetting is just fine when shooting pitch black images like theater. LOVE LOVE LOVE the 50mm focal length on the wide end on full-frame, it's sooo perfect for stage photography!

Anyways, enjoy the Nikon 24-70. It is by far the sharpest 24-70 ever made, and a near-flawless lens in general.
