That being said, I'm really struggling here. Monday's, especially evenings, and Tuesday are my "biggest" days, and I use that term very lightly. This is happening a lot lately and I know it affects all users but what gives? Like I said, this is going to be my 4th or 5th year and I think there have been more issues this year alone already than combined in the previous 3 or 4.
I already have missed on a couple of sales because of site issues that were just brought to my attention this past weekend, I do event sales, and I am affraid that I may miss out on a few more tonight. I already offer free shipping to all of my customers but I don't know what else I can do to keep my reputation in positive light.

One form of time travel is thru Captured Moments
I tripped over the servers power cord.
Do you believe that your current design approach of not having fully redundant infrastructure necessitating that you perform maintenance and upgrades on your PRODUCTION systems is appropriate or competitive compared to virtually all other photo hosting sites?
I LOVE you guys, I LOVE the customisation, but it feels like your infrastructure design still belongs in a garage.
I do know the complexity involved - I am a solution architect for a Telco and a good part of my job is designing systems and processes so that customer services aren't impacted by upgrades etc.
It's hard, but it's possible - and with your scale I can't imagine a reasonable excuse not to be setup the right way.

I thought it was me trying to put a slide show on my home page. I finished pasting the code in and the site went down after I saved it.

You most defiantly fail at slide shows. You freaking broke Smugmug!

:yikes
An entire company, Tandem, came and went into history on the idea of 100% uptime (no downtime) by fully mirroring the online systems, i.e., in 'tandem'.
As brilliant as you guys are most of the time, this strikes me like building a nuclear reactor on an earthquake fault-line, and puts ALL of our businesses at risk.
I once isolated a random glitch that would crash all onlines in all of a hospital's nursing-pharmaceutical stations that took two weeks to resolve.
It would only occur when a particular carriage-tape was used to print a particular form on an IBM 1401 printer. A hole would catch a wire on a wire-brush (to keep the rotating-tape free of any debris) and bend it just enough such that the static electricity produced by the brush-on-tape-rotation was sufficiently strong to create a single spark that thru a cascading series of lack of protections, would crash the entire system.
Of course, the system would be brought back online, assurances were given that the problem was solved, and it would re-occur weeks or minutes later -- only when that particular form was printed on that particular printer.
Without 100% online redundancy, we are all vulnerable. If I'm posting a photo of the license-plate of someone fleeing a hit-and-run and it can't be viewed...
If not now, when? If not you, then who?
Maybe not so important when starting the new company, but it's now overdue. When assessing risk, this is a no-brainer to corporate risk-assessment analysts.
Maybe your historical uptime percentage-wise is very good, and though you've never fallen, it seems clear that you ARE dancing on a high-wire.
Say it ain't so -- please.
I should clarify that I believe SM has taken the right approach to our data integrity - I don't have any doubt that the storage is solid.
I do have concerns about the delivery infrastructure. I can't think of many major sites that have to plan outages to do even small drops in features. It should be seamless, but it still looks like Smugmugs approach is just about "Shut it down, load new software, OK, start it up again!"
This may be touching a nerve, and their entire system may not be architected in a way that anything but this is possible, but planned downtime for maintenance is really poor guys. Not having an instant rollback, or having the 'other half' of the infrastructure still serving from the current version really sucks.
Tell me I'm wrong. Tell me that you honestly believe you're doing it the right way.
Cheers - N
