Bulk thumb crop position

I really like the way the square thumbs look, but using them means that I have to manually crop almost all of the images I upload. A majority of my photos are verticals of people so my square crops are all of torsos.

I want to be able to specify the default location of the crop (ie. top-center) as opposed to always the middle. I've read about a hack that was disabled by some back-end upgrades. Is there any new tools to help with this.

    We really need BZT fixed.

Or at least do the crop thumbnail processing in the background and move on
    to the next thumb.

I can only assume by the lack of response to anything regarding the BZT tool means SM either does not care or has something big to release. But either way not responding sure does not make me warm and fuzzy.

Wait. Whww--aa?? By BZT I assume you mean Bulk Zoom Tool. Are you saying we had one of these? eek7.gif When? Where? I can't find it and have never seen it. I feel very afraid that I'm asking an entirely idiotic question, but I'm perfectly serious.... unless it's something that's been broken forever, like before I got here! Where is/was this animal?!

It was a hack written by a SmugMug customer, years ago. Search Dgrin for Bulk Zoom Thumbnail and you will find it.

It worked great. All the photos on the page/gallery would show and you just
set the crop on each and hit save. In about two minutes the whole set of
thumbs would be changed. Although it takes some time scrolling down each photo
and setting the crop you could walk away or browse elsewhere in different
window/tab while it processed. With the current cropping feature you have to
sit there and keep clicking for every thumb. We really need a way to multiple
    crops. The silence is terrible

I don't think BZT will come out of the ashes. But we'd love it if you would all post on http://feedback.smugmug.com thanks!

I guess nobody uses it out there in MV so it ain't important. I would guess
every portrait photog would love to use it because of the stupid way people
heads are cut off with square thumbs. Can you tell I'm really pissed? :D But
    life goes on.

Dev is in Melbourne, AU. I'm in NY. And we both used it. We know we need something better than what's there, Allen.

I'm confused. Nothing in this convo has led me to whatever conclusion you're coming to, but I hope you're right!! The other thing I'm confused about-- why are we complaining to Smug if this was a hacked app? They aren't responsible for the life or death of those hacks, are they? But then Andy himself even says to put it in the Feature forum. Does that mean to ask for a real Smug feature, or to ask for the hack to come back? I'm pretty much a muddled mess, clearly. I just want whatever will work here. I hate those freakin' square thumbs with their terrible crops, & barely ever use 'em because of it. Big waste of time. So someone straighten me out here!!

One thing I've learned being around SM for the last 5 years... if no one replies it's because you ticked em off and they are giving you the cold shoulder (you know it happens so don't say it doesn't) or something is on the horizon. When something new is brewing SM will not speak of it to save a life...
As for the hack... it's been an integral part of SM life around here for as long as I can remember. Breaking hacks is sonething Sm tried not to do, but this one was a biggie...

Sure Andy I'll post at feedback.smugmug.com

We didn't wake up one day and say "let's break this hack" :) We had to remove something that the hack used, for security purposes.
