Cheap D40-compatible flash for a flash newb?

I'm considering foraying into the flash photography field with something other than my D40's internal flash. Initially, I was leaning towards the SB-400 because it's cheap, small, and sufficient for what I envision using it for, which is basically indoor, low-light shots of friends and family.
But then I realized that there are quite a few cheap third-party flashes. Some that jump out from that list are Sunpak, Bower, Vivitar. However, there are too many to choose from, initially at least.
Should I consider something like this over the SB-400 (which is more than twice as expensive, and OOS in most places)? Or should I consider something a bit more beefy, considering I can still get something for under $140? Or is it not worth straying from Nikon gear?
I'm really not interested in the higher-end SB-x00 due to the price and weight/size. I can see myself not using my flash much because of the bulk, but the SB-400 or similar I'd probably just leave on the camera all the time.
Anyone have experience with third-party flashes? Or any advice in general for me?
Thanks!
